Peter Techet´s Analyses on Populism in Hungary and Slovakia

Péter Techet (from the project “European Un/Orders”) has recently published three analyses on populist tendencies in Hungary and Slovakia in the daily newspapers Kyiv Independent, Der Standard, and Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
In his article for the Ukrainian online daily Kyiv Independent, Dr. Techet analysed the reasons and possible outcomes of the pro-Ukrainian and pro-European protests in Slovakia.

In his article for the Austrian daily newspaper Der Standard, which was also published on the blog of the Eastern Europe Research Group at the Political Science Institute of the University of Vienna, Dr. Techet examined whether and how the new Hungarian opposition party of Péter Magyar could defeat Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party in the upcoming 2026 elections.

In his essay for the Swiss daily newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Péter Techet wrote about the parallels between Hungarian nationalism in the late Habsburg Monarchy and the European Union: the Hungarian elite, both then and now, used an “anti-imperial” rhetoric against democratization and federalization (then against Vienna, today against Brussels) to secure their own power.
